A few of my favorite things

They went together like pb&j.

I sat down tonight to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. To those who know me this is nothing out if the ordinary, I eat multiple pb&j sandwiches a week. But tonight’s seemed a little bit more special. Today we celebrated the life of my grandpa Clinton, who passed away last week. While I was at the family service last night I listened to so many stories of grandpa, and how he taught so much to so many people.

While I did learn many things from him, it’s peanut butter that reminds me of him. He always had these cracker things and he would put peanut butter on them, to have with his coffee. He was very particular about the way he got peanut butter out of the jar. You couldn’t just dig your knife right into the middle of it. You slowly scrapped it off one layer at a time. It was easier that way to get every last bit of peanut butter out of the jar!

It shouldn’t surprise many that jelly reminds me of grandma Vera. Tonight I had some raspberry rhubarb jelly on my pb&j. For those who knew my Vera, you know she was famous for her jellies and jams! I actually didn’t realize you could buy jam in a grocery store until I was well passed middle school! I kinda figured everyone had a grandma who made jelly!

My grandma passed away in February just a few days after Justin’s surgery in Mayo. He was still in the ICU so I didn’t make it back for the funeral. As luck would have it the ground was still frozen so she wasn’t buried until today with grandpa. Just like peanut butter and jelly, grandma and grandpa where always inseparable. Even in death months apart they still managed to be laid to rest together.

I sat and stared at that peanut butter and jelly sandwich for awhile tonight thinking of them. I’m glad my favorite sandwich reminds me of two wonderful people. Im sure they are sitting around a table tonight in heaven playing pinochle!
